What was the City up to on Election Day?

A lot of things apparently.

While we were voting, the City of Johannesburg was working as well, so says City Manager, Trevor Fowler.

According to Fowler, City officials and residents who assisted the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) were hard at work on 3 August:

– The City helped the IEC  with coordinating and managing the provincial election results centre at the SABC in Auckland Park. Staff worked in excess of 36 hours and Fowler said they were highly committed to ensuring elections ran smoothly;

– The City provided 81 results co-ordinators for verification of results slips and 36 data capturers to scan and capture results;

– The Johannesburg Metro Police Department had 2 635 officers help to provide security and logistical support;

-The City’s Disaster Management team helped keep things such as IEC tents from blowing over because of strong winds, so as not to disrupt voting;

– The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), Pikitup and City Parks [www.jhbcityparks.com] helped keep voting stations clean and well maintained;

– Power outages in the City were attended to in “the shortest time possible.”
