City of Joburg gears up for election
Final preparations are put in place for the 2016 municipal election.
The City of Joburg is in the final stages of preparing for the municipal election which takes place on 3 August.
Gregory Daniels, the Municipal Electoral Officer for Joburg said, “There has been a tremendous amount of work done over the past months to ensure the necessary logistics are in place for a smooth election.” He also said that a lot of meetings were held with various city departments and entities to ensure provision of services at the voting stations. These include grass cutting, standby generators, electricity, water, maintenance of facilities, toilets, security and other critical services.
Joburg has been divided into 12 regions. Each region has between three and nine area managers, and there are over 40 results coordinators for election day. These coordinators will be responsible for the verification of the results prior to the capture thereof.
There are 842 voting stations, from the most northern part of Johannesburg (Diepsloot and Midrand) to the south (Lakeside and Orange Farm). About 2 800 Metro Police officers will be deployed in the vicinity of these voting stations. They will also be responsible for the safe transportation of ballot boxes.
26 parties and 32 independents will be contesting the election. A code of conduct was recently signed by all the parties and independents to encourage them to maintain discipline on voting day, especially among their supporters.
Parties have 14 days after the election to remove campaign materials, as stated in the Outdoor Advertising Bylaws, section 33(3). This period has been extended by seven days.
