One of the country’s top maths pupils, Ethan Kirstein, a Grade 7 pupil at Florida Laerskool and a Florida Glen resident, has been invited to compete in the Mental Maths World Cup 2016 in Bielefeld, Germany.
Now 12 years old, Kirstein started with A+Students when he was five. Throughout his short career with the company, Kirstein has competed in seven national competitions and four international competitions, where he managed to grow from strength to strength as he received several prestigious awards.
A+Students uses a Japanese method of education, Soroban, which teaches children to solve complex arithmetic problems by playing with educational toys.
Marlene Mouton, CEO of A+Students, received the invitation from the Mental Maths World Cup. To qualify, pupils have to do a challenging online exam in a limited time before they are considered to be part of the finals.
The company decided to put Kirstein forward for this and he completed his submission in April. Kirstein has qualified and received an official invitation to the World Cup.
The Junior Mental Calculation World Championship 2016 will take place in Bielefeld, Germany from 30 September through to 4 October where different categories include addition, multiplication, extracting roots, day-of-the-week tasks as well as several other surprise tasks. The competition puts the best of the best maths students from around the world up against each other in their respective age groups.
The Mental Maths World Cup is a respected competition across the globe, and therefore A+Students will proudly sponsor Kirstein, as well as one of his parents, to make the trip and make South Africa proud.
“I am so excited and thankful to have qualified so I am going to do my best to keep our country’s name high. Thank you to everyone who is helping me with the preparations for Germany,” said Kirstein.
