Budding footballers represent the West Rand
RADIOKOP – U12 and U13 teams travel to KZN for Bill Stewart Primary Schools Football Tournament
Four budding young footballers from Charterhouse Primary School joined other talented youngsters from the West Rand to compete at the Bill Stewart Primary Schools Football Tournament.
The annual tournament is over 40 years old with a number of well-known soccer stars such as Neil Tovey, Mark Fish and even cricketers Graeme Smith and Jonty Rhodes participating in previous years.
This year the event was hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The players represented the entire West Rand region and were selected based on talent and commitment.
Tour manager and chairperson of the West Rand Primary Schools Football Association, David Alcock, believes all talented players deserved an equal opportunity at exposure.
Eugene Coetzee, CEO of EC Security, that sponsored the trip, said developing young talent through exposure to events such as this was pivotal to South Africa’s professional sport.
“It is a privilege for us to be able to help at a grassroots level with the hope some of these youngsters grows up to represent South Africa one day,” said Coetzee.
According to Alcock, the teams were split into the Protea and the Central West teams, which finished in sixth and 14th positions respectively. “Teams from all over South Africa participate in this prestigious annual event and travel from as far as Limpopo and Port Elizabeth. We are proud of our teams’ achievements and will continue to work for an even better placement in next year’s tournament,” concluded Alcock.
