Three armed robberies in Witpoortjie

Residents urged to be vigilant.

Residents of the suburb once again suffered a spate of armed robberies.

On Monday five armed robbers stopped behind a resident who was pulling into his driveway in Gulden Street and held the occupants of the house at gunpoint. They took a variety of expensive sound and television equipment and fled in a blue/ grey Ford Bantam bakkie and the family’s Suzuki Vitara.

On Tuesday robbers struck again, this time in Van Alkmaar Street. Three armed robbers entered the house and tied up the domestic worker after which they ransacked the house. They fled in a black BMW 1 series.

Although technically not a house robbery, four armed intruders entered a house in Boren Street on Wednesday, ransacked it while the residents were hiding, and fled in a Nissan Tiida.

West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) spokesperson Frik van Zyl urged the public to be vigilant. Van Zyl said because residents often fail to comply with basic safety measures, such as checking whether a vehicle is behind you when you pull into your property, they fall prey to hijackings and house robberies.
