Come roar with the Lions

Currie Cup in our backyards

The Roodepoort Rugby Club (RRC) is appealing to the community to come out and support the biggest event in the club’s history. RRC will be hosting a Currie Cup qualification match between the Xerox Golden Lions and SWD Eagles. The match will take place at RRC’s new home, Hoërskool Roodepoort on 16 July. Nine teams from this competition will play in the 2016 Currie Cup Premier Division, while the remaining six teams will play in the 2016 Currie Cup First Division. The six main teams affiliated to Super Rugby franchises – Blue Bulls, Eastern Province Kings, Free State XV, Golden Lions XV, Sharks XV and Western Province – will automatically qualify for the 2016 Currie Cup Premier Division, along with the three highest-ranked non-franchise teams. The remaining six teams will qualify for the 2016 Currie Cup First Division. Points from the qualification stage will not be carried over to the second stage.

With ten matches played, the Lions, who have recovered from a shaky start to the season, now lie in fifth position on the log with 31 points. Their last match was a 28-64 away victory against the Leopards in Potchefstroom. The SWD Eagles are in 9th position on the log with 26 points and are in danger of missing out on a chance to play in the Currie Cup Premier division. Their last match was a 23-28 loss to the Vodacom Blue Bulls in George.

These results put a bigger importance on the match between the two teams with only three matches left to play in the series.

The two clubs have faced each other numerous times in the Vodacom Cup with the Eagles having never registered a victory; however, it will be the first time they clash in a Currie Cup match.

With such an opportunity to watch the two teams battle on the field, the Roodepoort Rugby Club have been making sure nobody in the community does not know about the match. With three other matches hosted successfully, the club is challenging the community to fill the fields to capacity to support the Lions.

RRC have promised a fun-filled day for everyone, starting with Welpie rugby from 8am to 12pm. A tournament featuring schools such as Maragon Private Schools, and Hoërskole Linden and Florida will take place on the A field. There will be various stalls as well as jumping castles and other fun games for children. Fans will get a chance to get their picture taken with the Currie Cup trophy and meet the players from the Lions and Eagles.

Entrance to the games has been set at a standard rate of R20 per vehicle, while walk-ins will need to pay R10 each. Season-ticket holders will have free entrance to all these matches. There will be VIP facilities, bar facilities, food stalls and a children’s play area. Main pavilion seating (family zone) will cost R30, while the cordoned-off VIP Bar-service Zone will set you back R300, which includes lunch, snacks and a R100 drinks voucher (additional drinks will be available from the cash bar).
