I’m a scared woman who experienced a break-in on 20 May.

It was around 10:45am when I heard my dogs barking non-stop and later I heard a sound like a car is crashing my gate. I rushed to the window to see what’s happening only to find that two guys broke the gate and were approaching the front door carrying what looks like wheel spanners.

They were walking around freely in my yard as if they were working on something, I opened the window and I screamed and they immediately run towards the broken gate and ran away. I pressed the panic button and Chubb responded quickly. There were garden services people working at Von Wielligh Street and told us that they know those guys because they stay at Princess Informal Settlement and they are foreigners.

I saw them the next day going to Princess. When they saw me they ran away because I was with my husband . The following week there was another break-in at Damper Street whereby the electricity cables were cut off from the main box. Some of the informal settlement residents told us that this place is a place for illegals who are committing crimes with the knowledge that they will not be arrested because their fingerprints are not on the system.

Princess is a place for criminals, at any given time you hear gunshots or someone is building a shack .We heard that there’s a guy who is selling stands for R1 500 to R2 000 to foreigners and this temporary shelters are occupied by them also.

They pay rent to the previous owners. Please we are asking for help from the police to go to informal settlements around Roodepoort to root out criminals because we are not enjoying our houses and they own the electricity box at Pannevis Street. They switch it off anytime they want.
