JJ and Gaylyn win Open Masters

Husband and wife wins Open Masters

With music from the Beatles and The Doors playing in the background, husband and wife JJ and Gaylyn Bedford Owen were on fire on the greens.

The pair was participating in the Open Masters tournament held at Discovery Bowling Club late last month (28-29 May).

They treated the supporters to fun and exciting bowls on the day.

In the Open Men’s final, it was a home ground affair as JJ took on fellow Discovery Bowling Club member Mervyn Lynn Jnr, both regulars in final showdowns.

Both competed with vigour but there could only one winner.

JJ emerged victorious and adds another trophy to his collection.

In another lane on the green, in the Open Women’s final, Gaylyn was taking on Ruimsig Bowling Club’s Mabs Rees.

The two are no strangers to being in finals and made sure to keep supporters at the edge of their seats.

Gaylyn was victorious over Mabs.

This was the third big competition held at local bowling clubs.

It follows the Seniors Masters competition which was held at the Witpoortjie Bowling Club early last month.

In the Senior Men’s category final, Ruimsig Bowling Club’s Bert Pottow claimed victory over Alan Lyall from Krugersdorp Bowling Club while Rustenburg Impala Bowling Club’s Anette De Wet beat Ruimsig Bowling Club’s Yvonne Brenner in the final to win the title.

On the same day at Witpoortjie Bowling Club, the Invitational Masters competition took place.

For the men, Rustenburg Impala Bowling Club won the final against Ruimsig Bowling Club’s Graeme Morton.

In the women’s final, Discovery Bowling Club’s Tracy Pego beat Carmen Jacobs from Leases Bowling Club in the final.

Morton who is also the Sables Players Association President was pleased with the tournaments played this year at the different venues.

“I would like to thank the Presidents of Discovery Bowling Club, Rob Mclarty, and George Nysschen from Witpoortjie Bowling Club, for all their assistance throughout the Sables Masters Events. They, together with their respective committees contributed to the events running extremely smoothly, and were thoroughly enjoyed by all the players,” he said.
