Police warn against a new trend

Handy tips to prevent falling prey.

Discovery Community Forum has issued a warning from police against an increase in driveway robberies.

Police said the culprits at first do not appear suspicious as they are smartly dressed and use expensive vehicles. They then rob their unsuspecting victims while they are parked in their driveways or waiting for their gates to open.

Residents are advised to apply these safety tips:

• Check your driveway and street before you leave or enter your premises.

• Make sure your driveway is well-lit and clear of shrubbery.

• Close the gate immediately when you enter your driveway. You are at risk if you wait for the gate to close automatically.

• Check your rear-view mirror and take note of any vehicle that has been following you for a while.

• Try to drive along different routes to your home and look out for vehicles following you.

• If you suspect you are being followed, put on your indicator and slow down at least two to three houses before your home. By doing this, you force the vehicle behind you to pass and you can get a better idea of their intentions. If the vehicle does not pass, drive on and observe it for a while.

• If you suspect you are being followed, drive to a busy location immediately and contact the police.

• Women who travel alone and older persons are more at risk as they are seen as easy targets.

• Report any suspicious persons, vehicles (especially those without number plates) or circumstances to the police immediately by phoning the 10111 emergency number.
