Dlamini raring to go

Boxer will be in the ring next month

Walter Dlamini is chomping at the bits to get into the ring for his first boxing match of the year.

The 36 year old will be going pound for pound against Xolani Mavumba later this month (27 May) in Klerksdorp.

The BRD Sports Academy boxer confidently stated he is ready for the match he’s been training for since January.

“I am ready for the fight. I’ve been working hard on my fitness while I waited for the match to be confirmed. Now I am excited to get into the ring and have a battle,” he said.

Dlamini who is a Florida resident is no pushover. He is a four time South African Amateur champion and has a record of 12 wins, two draws and one loss.

He started boxing at a young age and was inspired by local boxing icons such as Isaac Hlatshwayo and Cassius Baloyi.

With a burning love and passion for the sports, he met his current trainer Manny Fernandes in 2001 who recommended him to another club.

“I developed as a boxer and my love for it only grew stronger. It was then it 2012 that I partnered up with Manny again and I have not looked back since,” he said.

At the age of 36, Dlamini wants to prove to the youth that age does not matter when one has the passion, drive and determination to succeed.

“It’s nothing but a number. I am still young and there are things within boxing that I want to achieve. You have to push forward with your vision and work hard,” he said.

He also added the reason his love for the sport has grown over the years is because of the discipline one gets from the sport.

“That is what makes it so special. It teaches you to stay away from harmful substances such as drugs and alcohol. Discipline, focus and hard work are very important in boxing,” he said.

His goals for this year are to win a title and make his club and family proud.
