A wall to remember those without a voice
"We want to honour their memory"
The Roodepoort SPCA plans to erect a wall of remembrance in honour of all the abused, neglected and unwanted animals that have walked through their doors.
The gesture is inspired by the greyhound the Record reported about last year. The dog was beaten so severely it had to be euthanised.
During the court proceedings, a video was shown of the dog howling in pain, but it did not stop the owner from beating him mercilessly with a knobkerrie until he was unconscious because it allegedly had eaten its own faeces.

The owner received a three-year prison sentence.
Conviction: Fate of infamous dog abuser
According to Roodepoort SPCA manager Mandy Cattanach, justice was served, but the memory of the greyhound will live on forever. “The wall of remembrance is aimed at all the animals that were rescued from horrible circumstances and given love, care and attention, but for various reasons had to be put to sleep. We want to honour their memory. We want the public to remember those who did not have a voice and had to suffer at the hands of humans, as well as the animals that we loved and cared for.”
Mandy appeals to the public to help them make this dream come true. “We need bricks and cement, and people to volunteer their time to build the wall. Plaques with the names of the animals will be displayed on the wall and by means of a donation, the public could add the names of their beloved pets that had died.”
A statue of a greyhound will be put up at the wall.
The SPCA is also in desperate need for dog and cat food. Mandy said they are scraping the bottom of the food barrel.
