Maragon wins Waterstone sports festival

RUIMSIG – Maragon Private School Ruimsig rocks the Waterstone sports festival.

Maragon Private Schools Ruimsig‘s first team hockey girls participated in the annual Waterstone Sports Festival on 10 April.

There was much excitement leading up to the tournament, as the team is very young and full of enthusiasm.

The first game of the day was against General Smuts High, where the girls won 5 – 0. The second game was a little tougher. The girls drew to Tyger Valley College 1 – 1. This meant that both teams were on equal goal difference and were required to give an excellent performance versus their final opponent.

In the final pool game, the girls beat Waterstone 9 – 0, forcing Tyger Valley to win by 10 or more goals in their final game in order to go through to the final. Tyger Valley only managed to score 7, thereby giving Maragon the path to the final.

In the final of the day, Maragon beat Brebner High School 7 – 0 and were crowned tournament champions.

In addition to the trophy, Brinlee Bontekoning (Grade 12) was name attacker of the tournament with 6 goals, and Caylin Barendsen (Grade 10) was awarded best defender.
