Boxers return triumphant

Boxers come home victorious after participating in national competition

The Gauteng team competed in the SA Junior and Youth Championships from the 23 to 26 March.

The provincial team had 19 boxers participate in the event in Cape Town against boxers from other provinces.

They returned home with 17 medals and a third place trophy in the team competition.

In the team, Witpoortjie Vikings Amateur Boxing Club had five representatives in Tyler Peters, Dawn Deutchman, Hester Botha, Phumelele Cele and Jared Hensberg.

Dawn won a gold medal while Jared and Hester won silver medals. Phumelele won a bronze medal and Tyler was unopposed and did not fight.

Public Relations Officer of the Western Gauteng Open Boxing Association and the head coach of the Witpoortjie Vikings Phillip du Randt accompanied the boxers as team manager.

“We are extremely proud of our boxers who did so well and held our clubs name high. In fact the whole Gauteng team did well despite being the smallest team at the competition.

We thank our boxers for their hard work. We are proud of all of them as well as the coaching staff.

As team manager I want to thank every person who supported our team,” he said.
