Auditions open for new, post-matric performing arts academy
Roodepoort now has its own performing arts academy for those interested in developing their skills after matric.
Auditions are open for entry into the new Westside Performing Arts Academy (Wapa) for performers who have finished matric.
The organisation was founded with the caring cooperation of the Region C Recreation Centre regional manager, Vanessa Montanus, as well as the Roodepoort Theatre and the Roodepoort Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Rocci). Wapa will open its doors in the second term of the year, said founder Ria Vorster.
Parties involved agreed to support the initiative so that Roodepoort youth could enjoy the full benefits of an internationally accredited, four year diploma course in musical theatre. Wapa offers qualifications accredited by Ofqual, WG and CCEA while Trinity College London assesses students’ skills through annual examinations. Subjects offered include singing, dance, acting and performing on a variety of musical instruments.
“Now our youth do not have to travel or live far away from home in order to qualify, the answer is here, on their doorstep, and of an extremely high and affordable standard that will allow them to go and live their passion internationally,” Vorster said.
Rocci has agreed to organise sponsorships for disadvantaged students who excel in their auditions.
According to Montanus the Roodepoort City Hall, where the academy will be hosted, is only the starting point.
“The City of Johannesburg seldom gets recognition when artists are trained at our recreation centres and continue their careers overseas.
“We are proud to take ownership and be part of this exciting academy, from which our youth will benefit,” she was quoted saying.
The Roodepoort Theatre graciously offered to be the official venue for auditions which will be held on 7 May.
