Fallen tree obstructs South Road

Fallen tree to be removed within two weeks, City Parks said.

A fallen tree was obstructing traffic on South Road as of yesterday morning, Tuesday 15 March.

It is believed the tree fell during stormy weather in the area on Monday night or Tuesday morning. The tree bordered the boundary walls of a corner house on Cypress Road, and fell between the stop street signage and the roadway next to it. It mostly affects motorists who drive from Albertina Sisulu (previously Main Reef) Road down South Road towards Corlett Avenue in Witpoortjie. It also damaged the boundary walls.

The Record alerted City Parks to the issue. Spokesperson Jenny Moodley confirmed that an emergency team will respond to the scene the same day, and shed some light on the procedure to follow in future, similar cases.

This morning, Moodley said the fallen tree has been moved out of harms way, but is still on the sidewalk.

“We’ve been inundated with calls about fallen trees over the past few days, given the weather conditions,” she explained.

“Responding to so many calls, it is thus priority to at least get the fallen tree or branches out of the roadway and out of harm’s way, so that it no longer obstructs traffic.”

Moodley said the tree and its debris will be removed within the next 14 days, as is the expected turnaround time on such a call.

She reminds residents to contact the hotline on 011 375 5555 to report any such matters.
