Region C tackles Davidsonville’s dilemmas
Illegal dumping, illegal connections and potholes addressed in recent community outreach programme.
As promised to the community, many government and municipal entities descended on their neighbourhood this morning (Monday 15 February) for what is known as an integrated Community Outreach Programme (iCop).
What ensued was a massive cleaning-up and sprucing-up of various streets and public spaces in the community, which forms part of Ward 71. Especially along Ethel Street work was done in terms of cutting the grass and clearing weeds and illegal dumping sites, which City Parks and the Community Work Programme took ownership of.
According to Region C director Mlamleli Belot, other involved entities included the departments of Social Development, Health and Housing, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) and municipal entities including Joburg Water, City Parks, Pikitup, City Power, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and Metro Police. Councillor Gert Niemand also engaged with the community.
Belot said these municipal entities had their hands full, tackling that which could immediately be resolved while putting measures in place to deal with ongoing issues, identified by residents themselves.
“Pikitup will today clear various illegal dump sites, but will identify and profile hot spots and consider involving small cooperates under the Jozi@Work umbrella in addressing the ongoing illegal dumping issue,” Belot told the Record.
“City Power in turn is dealing on the spot with illegal connections, which the community has pointed out, and various streetlights that have been reported as out of order.
“The JRA already in the short two hours that we’ve spent here, have commenced work on filling potholes and repainting some of the road markings, so that the roadways are safer to travel by.”
Belot said the initiative is just a starting point for Region C from where identified issues will dealt with on an ongoing basis. An open day with the Department of Social Development is scheduled to take place at the Davidsonville Recreation Centre next Thursday (25 February).
