Gateway Society make plans to raise funds

RUIMSIG – The Gateway Society's famous Christmas market in June to be replaced with Farmer's Market.

The Gateway Society in Ruimsig is a charity organisation dedicated to giving mental and/or physical disabled people a home and a school that caters to their specific needs.

Moira Short, fundraising manager at Gateway said that they are known for their two Christmas markets, one in June and the big one in November. “These markets are very time consuming to plan, therefore we decided to do only one Christmas market this year in November.” She added that they plan to have a Farmer’s Market in May. “It is easier to organise it,” said Short. This market will have a variety of jams and koeksisters.

Short mentioned that apart from the planned market, they also need people to donate regularly to their charity shop. “If people clean out their homes, they can donate all their unwanted items to us. If we can’t use it at our society, we will sell it in the shop,” said Short. She added that they can collect the items from people if they wish so. The Gateway Society charity shop sells everything from appliances, furniture, books and clothes.

On 13 February, the Gateway society will be selling cookies and other Valentine’s gifts at the Flora Centre in Florida at a street stall. “If we can make products ourselves, then we can use the money where it is most needed,” said Short.
