St. Blaze Day
This Christian holiday serves to commemorate Bishop Blaise of Sabaste who lived in the early 300s. He performed many remarkable acts and was of good and strong character. Not much is known of his life other than the miraculous curing of a young boy’s throat. Hence, this day is celebrated by giving thanks and in some circles, The Blessing of the Throat ceremony is performed.
Performed by the Shinto in Japan, this ceremony and day is held at the beginning of the Japanese New Year on 3 February which is also the change of seasons from Winter to Spring. A special ritual called mame-maki is carried out where soy beans are scattered to drive out evil spirits and seeds of misfortune as well as to welcome good fortune.
