Struggles won’t deter Phillip
Funding needed in boxing to help the sport grow.
“The lack of sponsorship is a huge challenge to the development of local boxers,” are the words of Western Gauteng Boxing Association’s public relations officer Phillip du Randt.
The 54-year-old who is also the head coach of Witpoortjie Vikings Amateur Club was elected to the position in June last year.
His goal is to procure sponsorship and funding for local boxing clubs and attract the youth to the sport.
However, as development of young boxers is at the core of the association, they will be organising a youth development tournament in Sedibeng in March.
Various clubs around the province will be participating and boxers will be showing off their talents at the tournament.
“We work with the young boxers as much as we can to develop them for the future but these youngsters can only go so far without the necessary funding so we will be working hard as the association to make sure sponsors come on board so these boxers can have a brighter future,” said Du Randt.
