Create better service delivery yourself
Are you ready to do your part to improve local governance?
In the past financial year residents have fallen victim to many billing botch-ups, suffered the shameless illegal connections in Princess and struggled to get day-to-day problems resolved.
It has left them discouraged, a lot of residents have given up on resolving the issue and made arrangements with the municipality to pay something back they don’t owe. Others have made peace with their faulty smart meters and given up on getting illegally-installed cell phone towers off their stoeps. ‘
Luckily this year the opportunity will again arise to make a change for the better in Region C. The 2016 municipal elections are upon us in May and aspiring ward councillor Caleb Finn of Florida encourages residents to make sure they’re registered to vote.
Residents are encouraged to visit the Roodepoort Civic Centre at 100 Christiaan de Wet Road, where the local IEC office is located. You can also reach their national office on 012 622 5700.
Here’s how to go about it, according to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC):
• You can register if you are a South African citizen over the age of 16 (you can only vote from age 18 though), and if you’re in the possession of a green, barcoded identification (ID) book, ID smart card or valid temporary identity certificate (TIC).
• Apply for registration during office hours at the local Electoral Commission office responsible for your voting district, or
• Register to vote on special registration days in your region (often referred to as registration weekends)
• Remember to call and make an appointment ahead if you mean to register at an IEC office
• Like the Electoral Commission of Facebook (IECSouthAfrica) or follow them on twitter (@IECSouthAfrica) to get regular updates on registration dates
• You must apply in person and bring along either your ID book, ID smart card or TIC
• No other forms of identification will be accepted, including passports and driving licenses
• No copies of documents will be accepted, only originals
• If you’ve already registered to vote but have moved residences since your last vote, you must visit a registration point and update your details.
• Find out where your correct voting station is on https://maps.elections.org.za/vsfinder/
• Voting district boundaries might have changed since you last voted, which will mean you’ll have to visit a registration point to update your details.
