Animals in the news is quite intriguing to people – more than other stories. Here is a roundup of the best feel-good animal stories of 2015.
From February people could watch the pair of black eagles of the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, live on a webcam created by Africam. The popularity of these eagles grew and more people wanted to take photos of them, therefore the webcam was created so that people could watch them from home.
Buddy, the one-eyed spaniel has been through a troubling life, but because of his story and his love of toys, the Buddy-Project started. On 23 February, a member of the organisation, Lauren Coetzee asked for donations and toys to be dropped off to help animals in need.
On 3 April, Maragon Private Schools pupil Ryan Steinhobel (14) aimed to collect 100 blankets for animals at the Randburg SPCA. He printed posters and asked children in his class to help and collected blankets which he donated to the good cause. His efforts resulted in him achieving his goals and presenting the blankets to Randburg SPCA general manager Craig Rudman “This young man has done amazing work for our animals. I am incredibly proud of his courage and perseverance,” said Rudman.
The black eagle couple in the Walter Sisulu Botanical gardens laid their first egg for 2015 on 11 April. A second egg was laid later. The first eaglet hatched on 26 May and the second one on 29 May and that is when the process of cainism occurred. The older eaglet killed the younger one, and remained with its parents until it was old enough to leave the nest
After going through a lot of trouble to get a distressed cat out of a tree, the cat rescued itself. On 26 August firefighters were called to Struben’s Valley, but as the firefighter climbed up the tree the cat leaped out.
