Residents are encouraged to follow dumping bylaws

ROODPOORT – A concerned resident reported an illegal dumping site in their area.

There are a number of reports of illegal dumping sites in various local areas. Bylaws that govern situations of this nature are used as a guideline.

A concerned resident witnessed a truck dumping waste illegally on the corner of Snelkaats Street en Haak en Steek Avenue in Weltevreden Park. He reported the matter to Honeydew Police.

Ward 126 Councillor Mike Tonkin said that there are laws that residents and society are required by law to adhere to when it comes to where they put their waste. He added that the matter of the illegal dumping site was not reported to him.

“According to the bylaws, residents are permitted to dispose of their waste, such as rubble, sand, building and household materials at garden refuse sites ,” said Councillor Tonkin.

In the instance where a resident witnesses someone else dumping waste illegally, they can take a photograph of the vehicle and the registration plate. They should report the matter to the JMPD who will follow up the matter.

JMPD Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said that he is not aware of the matter of illegal dumping that occurred in Weltevreden Park. “When a case is opened with the JMPD, I engage the director of bylaw management unit who then applies the bylaws according to the findings of the case opened,” Supt Minnaar said.
