Pikitup intensifies recovery operations
JOBURG – Pikitup workers intensify waste removal operations. Situation should be back to normal by next week.
Residents were hopeful that waste removal would normalise since the announcement on 3 December that the illegal Pikitup strike was over. It however, took a while for Pikitup workers to remove waste from certain areas in Joburg and this caused confusion among residents.
According to Pikitup spokesperson, Jacky Mashapu, the entity is now intensifying its recovery operations, given the huge backlogs that accumulated over the strike period. Mashapu explained that the board and management of Pikitup welcomed the agreement reached to end the strike. He added that the entity is confident that the agreement paves the way for all concerned parties to begin constructive engagements around all substantive issues raised by the workers.
“Pikitup wishes to thank the residents and business owners of Joburg for their patience and cooperation. Pikitup encourages residents who are not able to wait for their normal refuse collection schedule to drop off their waste at the nearest garden refuse site or landfill until 11 December,” said Mashapu.
