RUIMSIG – Ride for MRP Foundation raises over R300 000 this year.
Leon Crous (32) cycled 660km from Heidelberg to Durban on 29 and 30 November – the fifth time the Ruimsig resident has done so.
The journey took two days, where a group of 40 cyclists covered 371km in 13 hours on the first day and 289km in 10 hours on the second day. Crous started cycling in 2011 and has been doing it since.
Crous cycled for the MRP Foundation to raise money for educational resources for children in the rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal. “It’s a challenge but all the brilliant people that I have met throughout the journey and helping the children of the foundation makes it all worth it,” said Crous.
Forty people completed the journey this year and their entry fee contributed to the foundation. They also sourced funds from businesses to sponsor the race. Since Ride4MRP Foundation started in 2010, over R500 000 has been raised and this year they have made over R300 000.
Crous is a business developer and owns a business with his brother in Ruimsig. He also helps another charity, Thuli House, for mentally disabled men in Orange Farm where he ensures they have food and necessities. “I like helping where I can and hopefully, I can get into helping more charities as time goes, also if I can create hope somewhere, why not,” said Crous.
“I just want to be a great husband and a great father to my two children,” said Crous.
In November next year he will be participating in his sixth ride for the MRP Foundation and he participates in local races during the year to prepare for the big 660km cycle.
