The illegal Pikitup strike, which started yesterday, is raging on in Johannesburg today.
Twitter is a mess with photos and tweets about disgruntled employees that have littered the streets of Braamfontein and even set an outside area at Pikitup head office alight. Police are on scene, trying to take control of the situation.
‘No work, no pay during Pikitup’s illegal strike
This morning, the entity confirmed that they have successfully obtained an interdict against employees that are striking illegally.
The draft interim order shows the application was treated as a matter of urgency. It interdicts and restrains employees from participating in the unlawful strike action and obstructing business operations.
The order reads employees are not to block access to the head office or prevent non-striking employees from entering or exiting the building.
The City of Johannesburg is advising residents to keep their refuse bins inside their properties, as “Pikitup has suspended all collection of refuse because of continued tensions”.
“We have halted our services,” Pikitup spokesperson Jacky Mashapu confirmed to the Record.
Mashapu apologised on behalf of the entity for the disruption.
“It is a temporary arrangement until such time that we are comfortable the situation has calmed down to the extent that we can reintroduce services in Region C among other wards,” Mashapu said.
“The interdict was approved and it is now up to the law enforcement agencies, like JMPD, to help us enforce it at head office and throughout Johannesburg.”
