Just a week after Joburg Water ignored Rand Water‘s plea to implement stage two water restrictions (no outside water use between 6pm and 6am) it now had a turnabout and is appealing to residents to dramatically curb their water usage in order to avoid stage three restrictions. Stage three will see water being cut of except in the mornings and evenings. Experts have said the possibility of stage three restrictions could come within days. Although residents will not be fined yet they are advised to cut down to minimum water usage.
Measures that can be taken includes no outside water use such as filling swimming pools, watering the garden or hosing down their vehicles. It is also advised to shower rather than bath and if bathing for the family to bath in each others water. Furthermore leaks at the home must be fixed immediately and public water spills or leaks must be reported.
According to Water Wise a family of four uses between 600l and 800l per day but van get away with 2.5 buckets per person.
