Water restrictions in effect
City of Johannesburg is warning residents if water is not used sparingly, harsher restrictions will be put into place.

The City of Johannesburg (COJ) has finally enforced water restrictions.
This comes after they were notified of a bulk supply system deterioration by Rand Water.
According to a statement signed by Councilor Matshidiso Mfikoe, the COJ officially invoked Section 44(3) of the Water Services Bylaw, a level 2 restriction.
This bylaw entails that residents, business and consumers are compelled not to water and irrigate their gardens between 6am and 6pm, not to fill their swimming pools and not to use hosepipes to wash their cars and paved areas.
Though water will still be available, the system supply pressure will also be reduced.
In the event that the supply deteriorates further, level 3 restriction would have to be imposed.
Level 3 would entail supply of water at stipulated times in a day, namely only in the mornings and in the evenings at times to be announced.
There would be no water supply outside of those stipulated times.
To avoid going to level 3 restrictions, residents are encouraged to use borehole water, bathwater or greywater for watering gardens, take showers, not to let water run while brushing teeth and always do full loads of washing machine and dishwashing.
“Those who are found not to be complying will be fined. The current situation is very serious and the residents must adhere to the instructions we have forwarded,” said the councillor’s spokesperson Anda Mbikwana.
Here is how you can save water:
*Install a low-flow shower head and tap aerators on all taps.
*Flush toilets only when necessary.
*Install a multi-flush or dual-flush mechanism in the toilet. A multi-flush device allows the user to choose exactly how much water goes to waste when pressing the handle. A dual-flush device has a short flush button for liquids and a longer flush button for solids.
*Plant water-wise indigenous plants.
*Water gardens only in early morning or the evening and only when necessary.
*Install garden drip irrigation on flower beds and sprayers on lawns.
*Collect rainwater for re-using on the garden or washing the car.
*Use a broom instead of a hosepipe when cleaning driveways or patios.
*Insulate hot water pipes so that not too much water is wasted when waiting for water to get hot.
*Cover your swimming pool to reduce water evaporation.
