GALLERY: Hungry residents fill the gap at McDonald’s

RANDPARK RIDGE – McDonald's brings shopping centres to a standstill.

McDonald’s outlets across the country were packed to capacity when the South African brand celebrated its 20th birthday with a Big Mac Medium Meal special on 11 November. The first McDonald’s store in South Africa was opened in Blackheath in 1995.

Hundreds of residents flooded their local outlets to take advantage of the special, which was at a throwback fee of R19.95 for the first few hundred residents at each outlet on the day. Normally, the meal is charged at R45. It features a Bic Mac burger, chips and a cold drink.

Honey Crest Shopping Centre, Randpark Ridge, saw traffic come to a standstill, as residents rushed to the outlet at the centre. Catherine Bohloko and Mukai Zinder said that they waited for an hour to receive their meals but were happy once they received them. “Initially our colleagues were with us but they left after a while,” Bohloko said. Charice Rocha waited in the drive-thru for 40 minutes in order to fetch lunch for the staff at Tinytown Nursery School. Specials ran out at the outlet before 11.30am.
