To date no lawyer has been appointed to the man, 63, accused of abusing his Greyhound among other dogs in February.
Yesterday in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court presiding officer Delise Smit again postponed the case, filed by the SPCA on animal abuse charges, because Legal Aid had not yet appointed a lawyer to the case.
Greyhound abuse case postponed once more
Last week, she explained to the Record the case will be postponed until the man has legal representation in court. This is to give him a fair trial. On a previous occasion in September his advocate withdrew from the case after he changed his plea from guilty to not guilty. Since that date, the case has been postponed to be heard on 15, 26 and 29 October and 5 November. Some members of the SPCA feel the case exemplifies their difficulty in convicting an animal abuser, given the amount of time spent in court.
His next court date is set for 24 November.
