Update: Police comments on bribe taking cops

Lukewarm response from law enforcement.

Whether it is the restraints of protocol or a lack of will, Roodepoort Police and Metro Police’s reaction to cops taking bribes from drug dealers have been lukewarm.

According to Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the Metro Police corrupt officers can be reported to JMPD Internal Affairs at 011 490 1797 for all allegations to be investigated.

Those who want to report suspected corrupt officers in the Police can contact the Independant Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) and download the complaint form  and email it to Complaints.Gauteng@ipid.gov.za or phone the Gauteng office on 011 220 1500. The complaint can also be faxed to 011 333 2705.

Transgressions that can be reported includes the following:

• any deaths in police custody;

• deaths as a result of police actions;

• any complaint relating to the discharge of an official firearm by any police officer;

• rape by a police officer, whether the police officer is on or off duty;

• rape of any person while that person is in police custody;

• any complaint of torture or assault against a police officer in the execution of his or her duties;

• Ipid may investigate corruption matters within the police initiated by the Executive Director on his or her own, or after the receipt of a complaint from a member of the public, or referred to the Directorate by the Minister, an MEC or the Secretary of Police, as the case may be; and

Ipid may also investigate any other matter referred to it as a result of a decision by the Executive Director, or if so requested by the Minister, an MEC or the Secretary of Police as the case may be.
