Adventure Club celebrates 20 years

Roaring Twenties party theme to celebrate 20 years as an adventure club.

The oldest hiking club on the West Rand celebrated 20 years in style this past weekend (31 October).

With a Roaring Twenties theme which ranged from wearing outfits in honour of the time period, the Florida Hiking and Adventure Club had a dinner dance to mark the occasion.

Bill Brough, the chairman and one of the founding members of the club was a busy man as he attended to guests and welcomed them.

“The evening started out slow as people were watching the rugby but I’m happy now as people have made their way to the event. The club has survived for so long because we’ve had a consistent committee which has provided stability for the club. We always have a variety of ideas and host fun activities,” he said.

Brough also added that his fondest memory while in the club to date would be the trip they took to the Eastern Cape last year.

“In December last year 14 of our members hiked in the Transkei where we stayed with the local people in their huts. They cooked for us and we had lots of fun,” he said.

The club is heavily involved in the community and has numerous social responsibilities.

These include eradicating alien weed from the butterfly sanctuary in Ruimsig, entertaining previously disadvantaged children on hikes and nature outings and hunting and destroying snares and traps at Rhenosterspruit Nature Conservancy near the Cradle of Humankind.

The club also have their monthly club nights every last Tuesday of the month where guest speakers are often invited to speak about birds, fauna and flora, weather and travel while cooking and photographic competitions take place.
