Greyhound abuse case postponed once more
A new lawyer is yet to be appointed, according to magistrate.
The case where a greyhound was severely beaten with a knobkierie will be postponed until Legal Aid South Africa appoints a new lawyer for the accused.
Magistrate Delise Smit postponed the case in court again yesterday (29 October) because a lawyer has not yet been appointed. The accused, 63, was abandoned by an advocate previously defending him as the two could not agree about his defense. His legal representation withdrew on 30 September when the accused decided to change his initial guilty plea. Since that date, the case has been postponed to be heard on 15, 26 and 29 October but a lawyer has not yet been appointed, Smit confirmed.

The 63-year-old man stands accused of beating his greyhound dog to the extent that the dog had to be euthanised in February this year. The SPCA filed a case of animal abuse against him. Senior inspector Eric Taljaard in September showed the courtroom video footage of the incident in question.

In February, they arrived to the scene after receiving the video from a concerned resident. They found an emaciated Boerboel tied up and her puppies were among about 20 other dogs on the property, all in a poor condition. Besides the greyhound another female dog had to be humanely euthanised.

According to the NSPCA, in a publication dated November 2012, sentencing may go one of three routes; the man may either be imprisoned, fined or sentenced to correctional supervision. Maximum imprisonment in this case would mean no more than three years, and correctional supervision may be imposed not exceeding three years in duration. A fine as determined by the minister may also be imposed. In 2012, such fines were in the region of R60 000.
His next court date is set for 5 November.
