Greyhound abuse case postponed again

It is unclear whether accused found new legal representation after the previous lawyer withdrew.

The case where a greyhound was severely beaten with a knobkierie was again postponed this morning in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court.

According to Roodepoort SPCA manager Mandy Cattanach the case was postponed til Thursday 29 October due to the accused’s legal representation not showing up this morning. On 15 October it was also postponed to this morning, but no reason was given. The 63-year-old man who in February allegedly beat his greyhound dog to the extent that the dog had to be euthanised, appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on charges of animal abuse in front of magistrate Delise Smit.

On 30 September the prosecutor and other court representatives were shown video footage of the incident in court by SPCA senior inspector Eric Taljaard. The man initially pleaded guilty on all charges, but decided to change his initial plea. This resulted in his legal representation at the time choosing to withdraw from the case.
