Gun owner arrested after he accidentally injures three people
STRUBEN’S VALLEY – The gun owner is charged with attempted murder and negligent handling of a firearm.
The man (30) whose firearm accidentally discharged at the exit door of Makro in Struben’s Valley on 14 October, has been charged with attempted murder and negligent handling of a firearm.
“The firearm was in the owner’s possession (in a bag), the bag allegedly fell on the floor allegedly causing the firearm to discharge,” explained Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs.
The incident left three people injured including two security officers and one resident.
According to the police the injured people were not critically injured but were transported to Flora Clinic for medical attention.
“A criminal case was registered at Honeydew Police. He was not arrested as we have to take a statements from the victims that were shot and the investigation is not finalised as yet,” said WO Jacobs.
The police advised gun owners to wear their firearms as prescribed by the Firearms Control Act: 60/2000 section (84), “How to carry a firearm in a public place”.
She further explained that the firearm must be completely covered and the person carrying it must be able to exercise effective control over such firearm.
No person may carry a firearm in a public place unless the firearm is carried in a holster or similar holder designed, manufactured or adapted for the carrying of a handgun.
