Youth and children vow to transform Zandspruit, making it regain dignity and neatness.
On 9 October, they armed themselves with garbage bags and embarked on a clean-up campaign in their streets.
The residents turned out in their numbers to engage in the project which aimed at restoring the community by keeping Zandspruit clean.
Loads of garbage around the settlement’s streets were removed. The waste was dumped at a dumping site nearby.
Nhlanhla Nkosi, a secretary at Zandspruit community-based support team said that they were very excited at the turnout.
He added that the day’s activity will not be the only one, since they have plans on making it a regular exercise.
“The reason we wanted the children to be part of the campaign is because we want to teach them responsibility. We want them to learn to work for everything – not to expect hand-outs without working for the gifts before,” he said.
Many residents have expressed their satisfaction at the initiative. They deemed it as something that would better the environment.
“The streets are dirty and these children are part of the streets because they play in these streets – they must learn to be responsible and keep their playing places neat,” he said.
According to one resident Makoma Lekgotla, she wants to see her community clean.
“We all need Zandspruit to be clean; I was born and grew up here”, she stressed, while applauding the efforts of her fellow residents.
In collecting the rubbish, the residents were joined by the Impophomo representatives, a non-profit organisation.
Ntsoaki Khantsi from Impophomo said it was inspiring to see people taking charge of their own places of residence.
