Feel the rhythm of Capoeira

Discovery’s Capoeira Cidade de Ouro are hard at work preparing for their upcoming grading.

They will be visited by the officials from the Capoeira Sporting Federation of Rio de Janeiro.

They will be arriving later this month and will also visit other schools in Durban and Mozambique.

Their visitors will be conducting workshops on different aspects of the sport such as movement, acrobatics, music and instructor workshops.

“Many people think the sport is about fighting but there is more to it than that. There is the social and community aspect as well as the training. Most people who join fall in love with the music, history or philosophy of the sport,” said the club’s Kevin Jackson.

Capoeira is an African martial arts form that has its origins in Brazil where African slaves practiced it to escape their circumstances.

“It’s a game and we play, we don’t just fight. The playing evolves as the music plays. It is all about the rhythm,” said Jackson.

Jackson started capoeira in 2002 after he was in Brazil as an exchange student.

He was instantly attracted to the martial art and when he returned, he searched for clubs in the West Rand. Just four years later, he opened up his own club with Jonathan Solomon.

“I was blown away when I saw it being played in the streets of Salvador however here in South Africa there was not much exposure to the sport hence I decided to start the club,” he said.

There are two styles of capoeira, the Capoeira Angola which is slow and rhythmic.

The second style is the Capoeira Regional which is fast paced and more acrobatic.

The Discovery club teaches both styles of the sport.
