EXPERT ADVICE: Natural remedy for painful knees

JHB - Are your knees problematic?

Written by Claire Brown from Kumon.

Knees are one of those joints which are so easy to injure and so painful to endure.

I recently hurt my knee whilst free running and found myself rolling around in bed each night in a world of pain even putting a pillow between my legs to act as a buffer.

Now there are many commercial ointments and tablets one can take – at a price of course, but being a health and natural remedy fondie I wanted to whip up something that would work just as well (actually better) for quarter the price. So here it is; I hope you will find it works as well for you as it did for me. Please note this remedy can be used on children and is pet friendly for dogs.

The remedy consists of these simple ingredients:

  • Carrier oil: I recommend Arnica oil (this is a great pain soother and healer) but you can also use coconut oil. Use 1 tablespoon.
  • 1 teaspoon of Nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon of Ginger
  • And 1 teaspoon of Clove essential oils

This is just enough for two or three treatments to your knee so if you want to make for instance a weeks’ worth of mixture use 5 times the amount of each ingredient.  Keep it in the fridge.

How to use:

  • I recommend you use it when your skin is warm either after bathing or showering or after massaging the skin.
  • Shake the mixture before use.
  • Warm the oil slightly in the microwave (no longer than 30sec) so that it can be easily absorbed by your skin.
  • Pour about a tablespoon and a half into the palm of your hand and rub directly onto your knee ensuring to cover the painful areas and their surrounding areas.
  • Gently massage in with your fingers or with a gentle electronic massager.
  • Allow the rest to dry into your skin – I recommend bandaging it until the oil has been absorbed (or if you don’t like bandages you can use a knee guard band). This will keep the knee warm which helps sooth the pain and keep the skin warm which helps absorption.

Do this at least daily – but I recommend every morning and every night.
