Welview Domestic Watch meeting
WELTEVREDEN PARK – Welview Residents' Association holds a Domestic Watch meeting in Weltevreden Park to educate workers on how to prevent crime.
A Domestic Watch meeting was held recently by the Welview Residents’ Association on Candlewood Street, to encourage communication and educate domestic workers on crime trends and safety precautions.
Sergent Nicholas Makhura of Honeydew Police gave workers hints on how to avoid potential crimes such as keeping the door locked at all times, not allowing anybody onto the property without consulting the owner, being on a constant lookout when taking out rubbish or hanging up washing and not going outside when someone rings the intercom bell.
He emphasised that workers should not trust anybody they do not know.
Welview Residents Association chairperson Annie Pinnock said they hold a meeting every three months to encourage the communication on the WatsApp groups between the workers, SAPS and security companies and to educate the workers.
“They are the eyes and ears of the community as they are at home all day and can witness suspicious activities first hand,” said Pinnock.
She said the effectiveness of the Domestic Watch and the regular meetings have made a remarkable difference.
“The crime rates have dropped and criminals are caught easier,” said Pinnock.
Pinnock said the next meeting will be held in January 2016.
