#EcoMobility Festival: how does it affect you?

JHB – Residents travelling to Sandton can use Randburg Square and Cresta shopping centre to park their cars.

Cresta Shopping Centre is one of the park-and-ride sites for residents who will be travelling to Sandton Central Business District (CBD) during the EcoMobility festival which commenced on 1 October until the 31st.

With 500 confirmed bays available at Cresta shopping centre, motorist will pay a flat rate of R10 during weekdays from 6am until 7pm.

Residents can also use Randburg Square park-and-ride with 1500 bays available at a flat rate of R10. The site will be available to be used by motorists throughout the month from 6am until 7pm.

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck explained that there was confusion and residents were not sure how the system was working.

“People will probably struggle in the afternoon especially when travelling around with their bags. But it is still early to judge,” he said.

Truluck further recommended residents to use Uber transport. According to him it was financially viable and safer to travel.

“If you are working in or near Sandton, the traffic situation is bad. If Ecomobility works, then we will have some sort of blueprint to work on,” he concluded.

Ward 98 councillor Laurette van Zijl said residents of her ward were not badly affected since there was a park-and-ride site in her ward.

She explained that residents could park their cars and use the buses available. “As long as we have a regular bus service which works effectively and is always on time,” she said.

She concluded that it was very good exercise creating awareness about the reduction of carbon emissions and the council should consider extending the period. During the launch Joburg Mayor Parks Tau said the use of a number of roads in the Sandton CBD has been changed to prioritise the use of public transport, walking and cycling.

“This is all in a bid to reduce congestion, carbon emissions and the overall negative economic impact these have on our city,” said Tau.

He further explained that he moved his Mayoral office to Sandton for the whole of October to demonstrate the City’s support for the festival and his own commitment.
