Bokke on point against Scotland
Lood de Jager was named man of the match.
Clad in white like knights in shining amour, the Springboks charged their way to victory in their match against Scotland in Newcastle this weekend.
South Africa had a measured approach against the Scots and in the 11th minute they took the lead as Schalk Burger forced his way over the line.
Handrè Pollard converted the try to hand the Springboks a 7-0 lead.
The Scots tried to put some pressure on the Boks with some hard hitting tackles but the men in white kept their cool. A penalty by the Scots gifted the Bokke with three points as Pollard converted for a 10-0 lead in the 16th minute.
Shortly after, Scotland were once again penalised for a breakdown infringement and Pollard slotted in the penalty for a 13-0 lead.
The Scots, however, were not going to let the Boks have their own way as Greig Laidlaw converted a penalty in the 29th minute to get his team on the board.
Three minutes later the Scots received a gift as Jannie du Plessis was sinbinned after he entered the ruck without using his arms.
His sending off however had little impact on the Springboks momentum as JP Pietersen scored at half time after a line-out drive by the forwards. Pollard once again converted to extend his team’s lead to 20-3.
In the second half of the match, Scotland’s Tommy Seymour provided a bit of magic for his team following an intercept and went over the try line. Laidlaw converted and cut down their opponents lead to 20-13.
But Seymour was not the only one to provide a bit of magic as a drop goal in the 50th minute by Pollard restored order. Matters got worse for Scotland as Laidlaw was then sent to the sin bin for a foul.
With 20 minutes to go before the end of the match, Pollard extended the Springbok lead to 23-13. A penalty was awarded to the Scots and Duncan Weir slotted in to reduce his teams deficit to just seven points.
The game ended as Bryan Habana was rewarded for his hard work during the game as he scored his 61st international try in the 73rd minute of the match. This handed the Bokke a 34-16 victory.
With USA left to play, the Boks are ensured of a quarterfinal spot in the World Cup.
