30 unregistered guards arrested for fraud

HONEYDEW – Unregistered guards were arrested during the joint operation.

At least 30 unregistered guards were apprehended during a joint operation between Honeydew Police and Private Security Industry Regulation Authority (PSIRA) on 29 September.

One guard who was found in possession of a fraudulent PSIRA card was arrested for fraud.

An operation was done to verify the legality of the security guards and security companies operating at the different shopping centres in Honeydew.

“Honeydew Police are currently experiencing an increase in vehicle related crimes being committed at shopping centres,” explained Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs.

WO Jacobs further explained that problematic centres where identified by Crime Intelligence following which the joint operation was planned.

Suspects were charged for operating as security officers without PSIRA certificate under the PSIRA regulations.

“These unregistered guards are not trained and therefore do not know how to prevent crime such as theft out of and from vehicles,” said WO Jacobs.

She advised that both security companies and security guards should comply with the necessary Psira regulations.

During this operation the guards and companies where interviewed by PSIRA inspectors and the necessary regulations explained to both the guards and the companies.

“Operations are conducted by Crime Intelligence regarding the increase in crimes at identified centres,” concluded WO Jacobs.
