Roodepoort CPF meeting addresses important issues
Executives held a meeting to address issues in the area and plan the way forward.
Executives of the Roodepoort Community Police Forum (CPF) held a general meeting last week Thursday (17 September).
The meeting, which involved police officers and representatives from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) discussed plans they hope to implement in the area.
Some of the plans to lower crime that were put forward include:
• A youth desk. The youth desk will help young people to redirect their energies by doing something positive. They mentioned criminals are sometimes young, which is why young people might be able to curb the trend.
• A senior citizen forum. They feel pensioners have enough time on their hands which means they will be able to assist the police and patrol areas voluntarily. They will help by patrolling the areas and looking out for suspicious activity and alerting the police in emergency situations.
• Expanding CPF’s in Matholesville and Sol Plaatjie. They want to encourage community members in the Matholesville and Sol Plaatjie areas to get involved to join their local CPFs.
• Shopping centre forums. With the increase of motor vehicle thefts at shopping centres, a forum needs to be available to be on standby to attend to criminal activities. They will be on high alert both inside and outside the buildings and will assist car guards.
The highlights that were mentioned include JMPD officers working together to remove two transformers, six tons of electric cables that were confiscated by the JMPD and an initiative by the police that was used to curb illegal mining.
To raise money for community needs such as patrolling and equipment identified by the CPF, they will have a breakfast on 14 November at Baldeo Restaurant in Horizon View.
The event will include a buffet breakfast and a motivational speaker.
It will start at 9am until 12.30pm and tickets are R120 per person and an entrance fee of canned food will also be required at the event.
