Honeydew Sector 2 CPF hosted their general meeting at the Honeydew Police Station on 17 September.
Honeydew Police Sector manager, Sergeant Nicolas Makhura spoke about the increase and decrease of crime-related incidents in the area.
According to the Honeydew police statistics, theft out of motor vehicle is up six cases and common assault has also increased.
Theft of motor vehicle, burglaries of residences, burglaries of businesses, hijacking, robberies and murder have all decreased since last year.
Sgt Makhura stressed that crime ebbs and flows, “For example, in one week we can have no crime incidents and then in one day five crimes can happen.”
He also introduced what they believe will help fight the war against crime and that is “adopt a hotspot”.
He explained how the sector has been divided into four sectors – A, B, C and D.
Each security company that is in each sector should be visible in certain hotspots in the demarcated sectors.
“This will hopefully show criminals that there are always eyes on them and it should deter them from trying to conduct any criminal activities.”
As always, the concern about vagrants was brought up at the meeting.
Sgt Makhura said, “These people will not leave an area where they are getting good food or clothes. Residents need to be aware of what they put into their dustbins.”
In one case he explained how a vagrant was wearing a suit, and the man in question, showed the police the dustbin from which he got the suit.
Finally, chairperson John Baisley and police urged residents to put on their alarms and their beams.
“It may not always be effective but it does act as a strong deterrent to criminals.”
The next general meeting will be held on 29 October.
