The weekend is on our doorstep and the City that never sleeps is buzzing with entertainment for the whole family. Here are some upcoming events to enjoy.
Titanic – The Artefact Exhibition
18 September to 8 November (for the first time in South Africa) a display at The Zone in Rosebank can be seen of the events that happened on the fatal night of 15 April 1912. This was the night the world’s largest ship – the Titanic – collided with an iceberg and sank. More than 1 500 lives were lost and this horrific occurrence left people questioning what really happened. The exhibition will open at 9 am and cost
R85– R320. Children under four years can enter for free.
African Lifestyle and Heritage Festival
From Friday 18 September until Sunday 20 September an indication-of-the-continent-tour can be attended, to witness the beauty, diversity and ethnicity of Africa at Dries Niemand Picnic Park. Various foods and fashion pieces from different parts of the continent will be available. The day’s events will start at 12 pm and end at 9 pm. It will run at a cost between R70–R600 per person.
Wendywood Food Market
In Morningside at the Wendywood Shopping Centre, the Wendywood Food Market will tantalise everyone’s taste buds on 18 September. The market will start at 4 pm and end at 9 pm. There will be a play area available for children and entrance to the market is at no charge.
Earth Dance
The three-Day Open Air Festival at Woodland Gardens will start on 18–20 September. Earth Dance is known to be the largest synchronizsd music and dance event in the world with regard to world peace. The dance yearly aligns with World Peace Day and is also a charity event to raise money for various humanitarian charities. The festival will simultaneously happen in over 300 locations worldwide. The highlight of the dance is the world wide Prayer for Peace.
From the Footlights
Roxmouth, the multi-award winning star of local theatre, will perform in three concerts at the Teatro at Montecasino on 18, 19 and 20 September. The shows on Saturday and Sunday will commence at 8 pm and on Sunday at 2 pm. Tickets are sold at R150– R300 Computicket. He will be performing hits from internationally acclaimed Broadway and West End musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera, Sweeny Todd, Les Miserables and Chicago.
Spring Expo 2015
St Andrew’s School for Girls will host their annual Spring Expo on 19 September from 9am–4 pm. Entrance will cost R20 for adults and children under the age of 18 can enter at no cost. Various rides and a picnic park will be available for the whole family to enjoy. The expo is a well-balanced event, providing a wide variety of treats and bargains. On 19 September Bamboo Lifestyle Centre in Melville will host a market with no entry fee. Organic and locally produced food such as free-range chicken and eggs, farm butter and fresh bread with no added preservatives can be purchased. Fair-trade coffee will also be available. The market is working in collaboration with Slow Food Johannesburg. The market will start at 9 am.
Jozi Real Food Market
Pirates Sports Club will provide a great outdoor venue on 19 September from 8.30am until 1 pm where a wide variety of local food and drink will be available. There will be a jumping castle for children and sport will be screened at the Clubhouse. This experience is perfect for those who enjoy the sunlight of the outdoors.
The Parlotones Light up the Lyric Theatre
The Parlotones will be performing at 8 pm at The Lyric at Gold Reef City on 23 September. Tickets are R200 per person. The band obtained huge success on their Antiques & Artefacts launch. Just as their their highly praised Stand Like Giants album, Antiques & Artefacts is yet another bestseller for the group. Fans can be assured of a variety of new songs and the hit songs Beautiful, Push Me To The Floor and Giant Mistake will also be performed.

Feeling like some Afrikaans comedy? Be sure to find yourself at The Frindge at Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein from 22 to 27 September. Tickets are sold at Computicket online or at 0861 915 8000.
