New arena for 5-a- side soccer league

HONEYDEW – After the second pitch is completed the club will accommodate more teams and strive to establish women’s leagues.

Honeydew 5-a-side soccer team of Honeydew Country Club is currently building a second arena adjacent to its first pitch, hoping to attract more interested players and expand its league.

With competitive league matches played from Monday to Thursday nights, the new pitch would ensure that more teams are accommodated.

“It is our aim to provide top class facilities for our existing teams and to attract new teams,” explained 5-a-side owner JP Smith.

He explained that new teams would encourage competition and meet the demands of the growth.

The new arena is expected to be operational toward the end of September.

The club currently has almost 40 teams playing in four leagues.

During the afternoon, the pitch is used by Super Sports United Soccer School from 2 pm until 6 pm.

Honeydew 5-a-side will hold an opening tournament, spring-summer opening, when the new pitch is completed.

“We are looking for new teams to register for this tournament and also to establish Honeydew 5-a-side as their home arena,” added Smith.

Clubs will be required to pay an upfront fee to compete in the tournament, which is expected to take place at the end of October.

Soccer clubs around Honeydew and Randburg areas are encouraged to join.

“In the meantime, it is quite challenging. We have to limit numbers of teams participating in our league,” he said.

The new pitch would also assist the club to initiate a women’s league as they currently play in the mixed section with men. Interested teams can call the club owner and enquire about joining.
