Substation upgrade given the go-ahead
Residents fine with upgrade of substation, if City Power and CoJ follow due procedure.
The upgrading of the Wilro Park substation has been approved, after aggrieved residents aired their complaints at a recent public meeting.
Led by Ward 83 councillor Suzanne Clarke, who invited representatives of City Power to attend multiple meetings on the subject, residents had a chance to address issues relating to the substation which is in a residential area.
Engineers and consultants from City Power answered all questions the attending residents had.
One of the major concerns regarding the upgrade was its effects on noise levels and neighbouring properties, particularly the properties adjacent to the station. Some residents are still not entirely satisfied the neighbours will not be affected, they told the Record.
Council land, on which the substation is built, spans over two demarcated properties of which building will largely expand on the left side.
“After a long process of questioning and answering we came to a consensus that the residents are willing to give City Power the go-ahead.
“However, the City of Johannesburg are still to follow due procedure and advertise their intention to upgrade in local newspapers, giving residents a 21-day period to lodge formal complaints in writing,” Clarke told the Record.
“I also still want to invite residents to visit the site with me.”
She said developments on the site will happen over the next 24 months.
“Thank you to all the residents that got involved in this process and attended meetings; I urge residents of Ward 83 to come forward about other issues of concern and attend our public meetings.”
