Bert Close Park beautified for Arbour Day

Elbow grease put in to make a local park beautiful.

Arbour Day translated to hard work in Bert Close Park this morning, Tuesday 1 September.

Ward 85 councillor Carl Mann and some residents of Bert Close and surrounding streets got together this morning to labour away to plant 10 trees in the park.

The trees were donated to them by Johannesburg City Parks to be used wherever they see fit within the ward, and Bert Close Park was the first place that came to mind, Mann said.

For the past couple of months, he has been hard at work with the community to get the park cleaned and reclassified as a developed park, which would mean it would be maintained every four to six weeks instead of every 12-odd weeks.

They also want to get features like extra benches and swings installed.

Resident Ted Lawson and other concerned community members started a ‘Beautify our park’-campaign earlier this year.

It’s a unique setting with its own little stream, soft grass and lots of shady trees — now, 10 more than before.

Mann describes it as a baby step in the park’s development.
