SA wins three medals in IAAF

JOBURG – South Africa ranked 13th in the 15th IAAF World Championship.

The world had their eyes fixed on the final day of the 15th International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Championships on 30 August.

This year’s championships were held in Beijing, Peoples Republic of China over a nine-day period which started on 22 August.

World favourites like Usian Bolt (Jamaica), Genzebe Dibaba (Ethiopia) and Jeffery Henderson (USA), to name a few, competed in their relevant disciplines during the championships.

According to the IAAF website, South Africa was ranked 13th in the world by winning a total of three medals.

Wayde van Niekerk won gold in the 400m, Anaso Jobodwana received a bronze in the 200m race and Sunette Viljoen won bronze in javelin.

Kenya came first with a total of 16 medals, of which seven were gold, six silver and three bronze. Jamaica was ranked second with 12 medals: seven gold, two silver and three bronze.

The USA were close contenders with a total of 18 medals but ranked third due to lower levels of medals finishing with six gold, six silver and six bronze medals.
