Champion boxer is remembered
HONEYDEW – A memorial for slain boxer, Nkosinathi 'Tiger' Ximba is held in Honeydew.
A memorial was held on 13 August to commemorate slain local kickboxing champion, Nkosinathi ‘Tiger’ Ximba.
Ximba had attained great success in the fields of boxing, Muay Thai and kickboxing. Born in KwaZulu-Natal on 6 November 1990, Ximba moved to Joburg at the age of four. He began karate when he was seven and took up kickboxing at 13. After becoming the South African junior kickboxing champion in 2005, Ximba went professional in 2009. He achieved the titles of WKF South African K-1 champion and SAPMAC SA K-1 champion as well as many other successes throughout his fighting career.
Ximba was shot in Diepsloot, after assailants robbed him on 10 August. He died in hospital in the early hours of the morning.
The memorial was held at the Honeydew Fight Club, Ximba’s training ground. It was very well attended and when Mark Hey, Ximba’s trainer and adoptive father, asked the gathering if anyone had been personally trained by the champ a wave of hands shot up.
Notoriously confident and unwavering, “Nathi won mean”, said Hey. He lived uncompromisingly and affected the lives of everyone around him. Hey described him as a “genuine international champion.”
The local legend will be sorely missed.
