Mr and Mrs South Africa work together

RUIMSIG – Mrs South Africa Sarah-Kate Scott supports Mr South Africa Armand du Plessis in DeskBag initiative.

Mr South Africa 2014, Armand du Plessis, is focused on an education initiative. He is working closely with his official charity, DeskBags, a non-profit organisation. The Ruimsig resident aims to distribute 6 700 deskbags, with significance of the 67 minutes for Mandela, across the country.

DeskBags aims to tackle the problem of pupils without desks, who have to work on the floor. The DeskBags are recycled vinyl billboards and as such are extremely durable. The front flap of the bag is reinforced with ABS plastic, which allows for instant desk support for use at school or at home. The bag allows plenty of space for books and stationery. They are lightweight, waterproof and have a reflective strip for safety.

On 12 August, Joani Johnson, director of the Mrs South Africa competition, explained how current Mrs South Africa, Sarah-Kate Scott features in the initiative. “Sarah-Kate will leave next week for the Mrs Universe competition in Belarus, and organisers have asked each contestant for a school uniform and a school bag from their home countries.”

Scott will take a DeskBag. “It’s great that Mr and Mrs South Africa are working together,” Scott said. “It shows a level of maturity of the two platforms. The emphasis is how we can work together.”

Du Plessis is grateful that someone is helping to bring awareness to the charity internationally. “I’m so busy in South Africa and my focus is to get to every single province. In a few months, I’m heading overseas for the Mr World competition and I’ll try launch it internationally as well. But I cannot ask for someone better to take this over for me.”
